The Oliphant Inquiry – April 23, 2009 (Part 1 of 2)

Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

Witness: William Kaplan

The Commission hears testimony from author William Kaplan (the author of Presumed Guilty and A Secret Trial). Under examination by Lead Commission Counsel Richard Wolson, Mr. Kaplan offers a detailed recollection of his own interviews with Mr. Mulroney and Luc Lavoie, including repeated denials by Mr. Mulroney and his representatives of any relationship or financial dealings with Mr. Schreiber. He speaks about Mr. Mulroney’s persistent requests, in the fall of 2003, not to report on cash payments from Mr. Schreiber. Mr. Kaplan is also asked about his interviews with Mr. Schreiber and Mr. Schreiber’s account of meetings with Mr. Mulroney at Harrington Lake in June 2003 and Mirabel Airport in August 2003.
