The Oliphant Inquiry – April 23, 2009 (Part 2 of 2)

Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

Witnesses: William Kaplan, Paul Terrien

The Commission continues to hear testimony from William Kaplan (the author of Presumed Guilty and A Secret Trial). Guy Pratte (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney) conducts cross-examination, with questions focusing on Mr. Kaplan’s interviews with Mr. Mulroney, Mr. Schreiber, and Luc Lavoie. There is a series of bitter exchanges between Mr. Pratte and Mr. Kaplan about Mr. Mulroney’s alleged lack of candour on the subject of his business dealings with Mr. Schreiber. Richard Auger (Counsel for Mr. Schreiber) and Paul Vickery (on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada) conduct short cross-examinations. Commission Counsel Giuseppe Battista conducts examination of Paul Terrien (a former speechwriter for Mr. Mulroney), asking him about a February 1998 meeting between Mr. Mulroney and Mr. Schreiber at the Savoy Hotel in Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Auger conducts a brief cross-examination.
