Inquiries on CPAC - The Oliphant Inquiry – May 13, 2009 (Part 2 of 2)

Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

Witness: Brian Mulroney

The Commission continues to hear testimony from Mr. Mulroney, a former prime minister of Canada, with direct examination conducted by Guy Pratte (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney). Mr. Mulroney is questioned in detail about an April 1996 “examination on discovery” made following allegations about Mr. Mulroney’s and Mr. Schreiber’s involvement in kickback scheme related to Air Canada’s purchase of Airbus airplanes. He clarifies a number of statements in the examination concerning his dealings with Mr. Schreiber and proceeds to speak about a February 1998 meeting with Mr. Schreiber in Zurich and about his eventual agreement to pay income tax to the Canada Revenue Agency for cash received from Mr Schreiber. He is also questioned about attempts by Fred Doucet to have Mr. Schreiber clarify the exact nature of his business dealings with Mr. Mulroney. In the course of testimony related to journalists’ inquiries into his dealings with Mr. Schreiber, a spiteful Mr. Mulroney repeatedly condemns the journalistic practices of the CBC television program the fifth estate.
