Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney
Witness: Brian Mulroney
Mr. Mulroney, a former prime minister of Canada, continues his testimony before the Commission. Under cross-examination by Richard Auger (Counsel for Mr. Schreiber), Mr. Mulroney is asked about ongoing extradition proceedings against Mr. Schreiber, about various attempts by Mr. Schreiber to contact him, about the fate of cash given to him by Mr. Schreiber during a December 1994 meeting at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, and about his payment of income tax on cash received from Mr. Schreiber. Mr. Mulroney speaks about the settlement of his lawsuit against the Canadian government, launched following allegations of Mr. Mulroney’s and Mr. Schreiber’s involvement in a kickback scheme related to Air Canada’s purchase of Airbus airplanes. He denies earlier claims that he asked Mr. Schreiber about the existence of evidence of their business dealings during a February 1998 meeting in Zurich, Switzerland. The former prime minister is questioned extensively on the nature of his work for Mr. Schreiber, supposedly involving the marketing of Thyssen military vehicles internationally for peacekeeping missions, and Mr. Schreiber’s subsequent lawsuit against Mr. Mulroney.
