Commission of Inquiry into Certain Allegations Respecting Business and Financial Dealings Between Karlheinz Schreiber and the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney

Witnesses: Salpie Stepanian, Christiane Sauvé, Fred Bild

Commission Counsel Nancy Brooks conducts direct examination of Salpie Stepanian (Manager, Prime Minister’s Correspondence Unit in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO)), asking her about the handling of letters from Mr. Schreiber to Prime Minister Stephen Harper that were forwarded to the PMO by the Executive Correspondence Unit of the Privy Council Office in 2006 and 2007. Commission Counsel Giuseppe Battista conducts examination of Christiane Sauvé (an accountant with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)), with questions focusing on the provisions of the CRA’s Voluntary Disclosure Program. The Commission proceeds to hear testimony from Fred Bild (the former Canadian ambassador to China). Under direct examination by Commission Counsel Evan Roitenberg, Mr. Bild gives a detailed description of an October 1993 visit to China by Mr. Mulroney, including a meeting with Zhu Rongji, casting doubt on an earlier claim that Mr. Mulroney used the trip to promote Thyssen military vehicles for peacekeeping missions. There are cross-examinations by Guy Pratte (Counsel for Mr. Mulroney) and Richard Auger (Counsel for Mr. Schreiber).
