Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities

Witness: Paul Martin

Prime Minister Paul Martin continues testimony. Under direct examination by Commission Counsel Neil Finkelstein, Mr. Martin denies knowing details about the administration of the sponsorship program. Under cross-examination by Pierre Fournier (Counsel for Alfonso Gagliano), Mr. Martin is asked about the findings of the 2004 report of the Auditor General. He declines to provide details about the cabinet’s firing of Mr. Gagliano, the former minister of Public Works and Government Services, after recalling him from the post of Canadian ambassador to Denmark. Sylvain Lussier (on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada) cross-examines the witness, asking him about his government’s response to the findings of the Auditor General’s report. There is a brief re-examination by Mr. Finkelstein.
