The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Marlene Catterall

Commission Counsel Marc David continues examination of Marlene Catterall (Member of Parliament for Ottawa West–Nepean). Ms. Catterall recounts her involvement in Mr. Arar’s case beginning in September 2002. She speaks about arrangements for her trip to Syria in April 2003 to advocate on Mr. Arar’s behalf, including her unsuccessful attempt to obtain a letter from Canadian security services clearing Mr. Arar’s name. She describes her meetings in Syria with the Canadian ambassador to Syria Franco Pillarella, with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem, with security officials at a Syrian prison, and with Mr. Arar himself.
