The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Léo Martel

Léo Martel (former Canadian Consul in Damascus, Syria), who visited Mr. Arar eight times during Mr. Arar’s detention in Syria, continues testimony. There are brief examinations by Colin Baxter (Counsel for the Attorney General of Canada), Michel Décary (Counsel for Mr. Martel), and Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo. Barbara Jackman (Counsel for Ahmed El Maati) introduces a motion to have biographical information on Mr. El Maati as well as the brother of Mr. El Maati and Abdullah Almalki placed on the record. Alex Neve (on behalf of Amnesty International), Riad Saloojee (on behalf of the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations), Ronald Atkey (Amicus Curiae), Ms. Edwardh, and Barbara A. McIsaac (on behalf of the Attorney General of Canada) respond.
