The Gomery Inquiry – March 31, 2005 (Part 1 of 4)

Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities

Witness: Jean Brault

The Commission continues to hear testimony from Jean Brault (the former president of Groupaction Marketing). Under direct examination by Commission Counsel Bernard Roy, Mr. Brault is asked to explain documents detailing meetings and correspondence with businesses associates, Liberal Party of Canada officials, and government employees. He speaks about Alain Renaud’s role as a liaison for Groupaction with both the Liberal Party of Canada and the Department of Public Works and Government Services. Among the major revelations in Mr. Brault’s testimony are his description of payments made in 1993 to Liberal Party of Canada volunteer Daniel-Yves Durand after meetings with Mr. Durand and Michel Fournier, along with similar payments to Gaby Chrétien and campaign contributions to Yolande Thibeault. During questioning about an agreement with Jacques Corriveau to make payments to Liberal Party worker Serge Gosselin, Mr. Brault refers to such deals as the “miracle recipe” for securing sponsorship contracts. He describes similar agreements to hire John Welch and Maria Lyne Chrétien.
