Inquiries on CPAC - The Gomery Inquiry – January 31, 2005 (Part 1 of 3)

Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities

Witness: Pierre Pettigrew

Associate Commission Counsel Guy Cournoyer conducts direct examination of Pierre Pettigrew (former Minister for International Cooperation and minister responsible for La Francophonie), asking about the contents of a February 1996 report to cabinet on national unity and about the extent of Mr. Pettigrew’s knowledge of the sponsorship program. The Commission hears a motion by David W. Scott and Peter Doody (Counsel for Jean Chrétien) calling for the recusal of Commissioner John H. Gomery in light of remarks made in a series of high-profile interviews with the press in December 2004. Pierre Fournier (Counsel for Alfonso Gagliano) makes a submission in favour of the motion by Mr. Scott and Mr. Doody.
