The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Franco Pillarella

Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo continues direct examination of Franco Pillarella, the former Canadian Ambassador to Syria. The ambassador is questioned in detail about his correspondence with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAIT) in Canada and with Hassan Khalil, the Syrian head of military intelligence. Asked about meetings between consul Léo Martel and Mr. Arar at a Syrian prison, Mr. Pillarella denies evidence of Mr. Arar’s torture.
