The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Pierre De Bané

Senator Pierre De Bané, under examination by Commission Counsel Marc David, recounts details of a July 2003 trip to Syria to seek the release of Mr. Arar on behalf of the Canadian government. Recalling the contents of a briefing prior to the trip, Senator De Bané reveals that the United States chose to deport Mr. Arar to Syria following Canada’s refusal to guarantee his arrest.
