The Arar Inquiry – July 29, 2005 (Part 8 of 8)

The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Myra Pastyr-Lupul

Lorne Waldman (Counsel for Mr. Arar) continues cross-examination of Myra Pastyr-Lupul (former Case Management Officer, Consular Affairs Bureau, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT)). Discussion focuses on consular officials’ knowledge of the likelihood of Mr. Arar’s torture in Syria, prison conditions in Syria, and the sharing of supposedly confidential information from consular visits with law enforcement agencies. Confusion ensues when, during the course of questioning on the subject of Mr. Arar’s torture, objections are raised by several different government attorneys. There are brief cross-examinations by Barbara Jackman (Counsel for Ahmed El Maati) and Colin Baxter (Counsel for the Attorney General of Canada).
