Inquiries on CPAC - The Arar Inquiry – June 15, 2005 (Part 1 of 4)

The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Franco Pillarella

Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo, continuing his examination of former Canadian Ambassador to Syria Franco Pillarella, asks about ongoing efforts in the spring and summer of 2003 to have Mr. Arar returned to Canada. The ambassador is questioned at length about his stated wish to disprove claims that Mr. Arar had been tortured by the Syrians and about preparations in August 2003 for Mr. Arar’s expected trial in Syria. He is asked about a November 2002 invitation by General Hassan Khalil, the Syrian Head of Military Intelligence, to have the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) attend interrogations of Mr. Arar in Syria.
