The Gomery Inquiry – May 9, 2005 (Part 3 of 4)

Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities

Witness: Benoît Corbeil

The Commissioner rules in favour of a publication ban on depositions made by witnesses prior to their public testimony following the leaking of the deposition of Michel Béliveau. Associate Commission Counsel Guy Cournoyer continues direct examination of Benoît Corbeil (the former director general of the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party of Canada). Mr. Corbeil describes donations made by Jean Brault to the Liberals during the 2000 election campaign, including money channelled through Bernard Thiboutot’s Commando Marketing as well as direct cash payments from Mr. Brault subsequently distributed to several campaign workers. He also speaks about the appointment of Giuseppe (Joseph) Morselli to the party’s finance commission on the recommendation of Alfonso Gagliano and the hiring of Beryl Wajsman on Mr. Morselli’s urging.
