The Gomery Inquiry – May 9, 2005 (Part 1 of 4)

Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program and Advertising Activities

Witness: Benoît Corbeil

Associate Commission Counsel Guy Cournoyer makes submissions on a number of procedural matters, including the recall of witnesses and the limits of the Commission’s mandate. Mr. Cournoyer also seeks a publication ban on depositions made by witnesses prior to their public testimony following the leaking of the deposition of Michel Béliveau. Mr. Cournoyer proceeds with direct examination of Benoît Corbeil (the former director general of the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party of Canada). Mr. Corbeil describes his work on the 1997 and 2000 federal election campaigns and the Liberal Party’s serious financial and organizational problems in Quebec. He speaks about cash payments he received from Mr. Béliveau for distribution to the campaigns of Denis Coderre and Yvon Charbonneau. Mr. Corbeil is also asked about meetings with Alain Renaud and Jean Brault.
