The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Franco Pillarella

Franco Pillarella, the former Canadian Ambassador to Syria, continues testimony. Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo conducts direct examination, with questions focusing on Mr. Pillarella’s correspondence with General Hassan Khalil (the Syrian Head of Military Intelligence) and on supposed confessions obtained from Mr. Arar by the Syrians and shared with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The ambassador is also asked about a visit by CSIS officials to Syria in November 2002 and about meetings between consul Léo Martel and Mr. Arar at a Syrian prison.
