The Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar

Witness: Wayne Easter

Former Solicitor General Wayne Easter continues testimony. Under examination by Commission Counsel Paul J. J. Cavalluzzo, the minister is asked about statements by Colin Powell (United States Secretary of State), the alleged involvement of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in the deportation of Mr. Arar from the United States to Syria, and ministerial directives to the RCMP regarding national security investigations. Lorne Waldman (Counsel for Mr. Arar) cross-examines the minister on claims by Mr. Powell and Paul Cellucci (the American ambassador to Canada) that Canada approved Mr. Arar’s deportation to Syria. The Minister is questioned in detail about his knowledge of the involvement of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in the case.
