Did You Know? One hundred years ago, one of the worst maritime tragedies in Canadian history - and one of the worst in the world - unfolded in the St Lawrence River, off the coast of Rimouski, in Quebec. The Empress of Ireland , an ocean liner owned by Canadian Pacific, sank in less than 15 minutes, killing over 1,000 passengers, including many immigrants. This shipwreck subsequently became a forgotten tragedy.
