Perspective with Alison Smith
Canadians Imprisoned Abroad – December 11, 2016
This week, Perspective looks at the issue of Canadians held in foreign jails and the people who say Canada is not doing enough to help. Alison speaks to Mohamed Fahmy, the Egyptian-Canadian journalist who spent almost two years in an Egyptian jail. Gar Pardy, Former Ambassador and former Director General of Consular Affairs Bureau talks to Alison about the assistance that Canadians in trouble overseas receive at the moment and what a parliamentary resolution on this issue would achieve. Maryam Malekpour, whose brother Saeed Malekpour has been in an Iranian prison for eight years, talks about her experience in dealing with her brother's imprisonment and how the Canadian government could be doing more to help. Finally, Alison speaks to Lorne Waldman (lawyer representing Bashir Makhtal, a Canadian held in an Ethiopian jail) about the legal complications faced by Canadians imprisoned abroad.
