On May 3, 2007, in Toronto, Ont., the Centre for the Study of Democracy organized a conference focusing on "Getting the Word Out: Mass Communication during an Emergency.” The Conference brought together emergency workers and the mass media in an attempt to coordinate responses to crises in the future. The keynote speech was given by former CNN correspondent Aaron Brown, who discussed his experiences covering the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and Hurricane Katrina.
