Mariatu Kamara (a young woman from Sierra Leone, Africa) presents a speech at “Ignite Change Now! Global Youth Assembly 2009,” hosted by The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, Edmonton, Alta., August 1, 2009. In her speech, entitled “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. Or Are They?,” Ms. Kamara speaks about her harrowing journey as a child during the “blood diamonds” conflict.

This year’s conference theme is “Youth Building Communities.” Local, national, and international youth organizations work together to create projects and partnerships and learn to be the architects of change in their communities and around the world.
