The Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs held its 80th annual summer conference in Orillia (Ont.) from August 4th to 7th, 2011. This year's theme was "From the Ground Up: Civic Engagement in Our Time". The opening keynote address was delivered on August 4th by Jay Naidoo, Chair of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and co-founder of J&J Group, a South African-based holding and management company. Naidoo served in Nelson Mandela's Cabinet from 1994 to 1999 as the Minister responsible for South Africa's Reconstruction Development Program and Communications Minister. Naidoo was also Chairperson of the Development Bank of Southern Africa from 2001-2010.
