Canadian Governor General Michaëlle Jean gives the keynote address at the first International Conference on Violence Against Women, Montreal, Que., October 22, 2006.

The Governor General speaks about her commitment to improving women’s rights and the importance of open discussion regarding women’s issues. Ms. Jean also praises Athanasie Mukarwego, a Rwandan woman who survived the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. The conference is dedicated to Ms. Mukarwego.
