Proceedings of the conference “Integration and Independence: Canada–United States Relations” hosted by the Summit Institute in Ottawa, Ont., on December 4, 2003. Paul Cellucci, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, discusses new directions for Canada’s relationship with the U.S. with a focus on trade issues, national security, foreign policy, and energy security. Following this, Anthony Hely (Australian High Commissioner to Canada) presents an Australian view on maintaining an independent voice in a world of increasing trade and security integration.
Later on the program, a tribute dinner organized by the United Nations Association of Canada recognizes the achievements of Mitchell Sharp (a former cabinet minister in the Trudeau and Pearson governments) in Ottawa, Ont., on November 26, 2003. Mr. Sharp reflects on his experiences in government.
