Day of Hope: Roundtable on Reconciliation
The Legacy of Hope Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Foundation host a roundtable discussion, Ottawa, Ont., June 11, 2009. This event marks the one-year anniversary of the federal government’s apology to former students in Canada’s residential school system. Following an opening address by Governor General Michaëlle Jean, speakers explore approaches to healing and reconciliation in the post-apology era. The panellists are Phil Fontaine (National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations), John Ralston Saul (an author), and Joseph Robert (the hereditary chief of Gwa wa enuk First Nation). The panellists also respond to questions from audience members. Elder Irene Lindsay (a cultural and spiritual teacher at Minwaashin Lodge) offers smudge and an opening prayer. Isabella Tatar, the executive director of the Legacy of Hope Foundation, makes opening remarks. Rosemary Thompson from CTV News moderates the panel discussion.
