The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) holds its 30th Annual General Assembly in Calgary, Alberta, July 21–23, 2009.

In this July 21st session, the AFN holds an all-candidates debate for the election of a new national chief. The candidates are Shawn Atleo (Chief from the Ahousaht First Nation), John Beaucage (Grand Council Chief of the Anishinabek Nation), Perry Bellegarde (Grand Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations), Bill Wilson (former chief of Cape Mudge), and Terrance Nelson (Chief of Roseau River, Anishinabe First Nation). The candidates present speeches addressing the concerns of First Nations communities across Canada and then take questions from audience members. The assembly is chaired by Loretta Pete Lambert (Chief Electoral Officer for the AFN).
