Halifax Int'l Security Forum: Afghanistan: Transition To What?
Halifax International Security Forum From November 20th to the 22nd, 2009, the Halifax International Security Forum took place in that city, in Nova Scotia. This first-of-its-kind conference in North America addressed the top global security challenges facing the transatlantic community. In the opening panel on November 21st, U.S. Senator John McCain was joined by General (Ret.) Rick Hillier (Canada's former chief of the defence staff), Najam Sethi (editor-in-chief of Pakistan's Daily Times), and Michael Semple (research fellow at Harvard University's Carr Center for Human Rights) to discuss the past, present and future in Afghanistan. While not always on the same page, the four members of the panel did agree that the United States should proceed with a military "surge" in Afghanistan and that the war in Afghanistan cannot be won without the help and cooperation of Pakistan.
