2009 Halifax International Security Forum (Part 5 of 8)
The Halifax International Security Forum is held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, November 20–22, 2009. This conference is the first of its kind in North America and addresses the top global security challenges facing the transatlantic community. In this final panel discussion on November 21st, entitled “Law v. Power: Who Rules? Who Makes the Rules?,” panellists discuss the tension between law and power. Discussion focuses on the role of international law and whether UN-based institutions, treaties, and rules should be reviewed, reformed, or replaced. The panellists are Beverley McLachlin (Supreme Court of Canada Chief Justice), Greg Craig (White House counsel), Stephen Breyer (United States Supreme Court associate Justice), and Hina Jilani (AGHS Legal Aid Cell (Pakistan)). After speaking, panellists respond to questions from audience members.
