Buy American/Buy Canadian: The New Protectionism?
The One Issue, Two Voices series draws on expertise from both sides of the Canada–U.S. border to stimulate dialogue on policy issues affecting the bilateral relationship. The first session, in Washington, D.C., on May 4th, 2010, featured a discussion on protectionism and the controversial "Buy American" policy. Robert Baugh (executive director of the AFL–CIO Industrial Union Council) and William Robson (president and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute), debated their contrasting approaches to the concept. The moderator was William Krist, a senior policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. The next discussion, scheduled for May 11th in Ottawa, features the same panelists with moderator Glen Hodgson, the Conference Board of Canada's chief economist.
