The Couchiching Institute on Public Affairs held its 79th annual summer conference in Orillia, Ont., from August 5th to 8th, 2010. This year's theme was "Watershed Moment or Wasted Opportunity." Participants examined the global economic meltdown and how it has changed views on the economy, the role of the state, and public policy.

This August 7th panel, entitled "Shifts in Global Power" featured presentations by Wenran Jiang (Mactaggart Research Chair of the China Institute at the University of Alberta), Andy Knight (professor of international relations in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta) and Neil K. Shenai (PhD candidate at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.). The Right Honourable Paul Martin, former prime minister of Canada, joined the panel for the question and answer period.
