The Promise of Media in Halting Mass Atrocities

On October 20-21, 2011, in Montreal, the Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University organized a conference titled "The Promise of Media in Halting Mass Atrocities: A Conference to Mark the 10th Anniversary of the Responsibility to Protect."

The second panel of the day, "From Streets to Tweets: Harnessing the Power of Social Media and Serial Media Drama for Peace," featured Todd Van der Heyden (CTV), Mona Eltahawy (journalist and commentator), and Sheldon Himelfarb (associate vice-president, United States Institute of Peace). The panellists discussed the role that social media can play in harnessing support for social movements on a global scale.
