From October 3rd to 5th, 2011, in Ottawa, UN Women and the Canadian International Development Agency organized a conference entitled "Conference on Women's Economic Empowerment." The opening session on October 4 featured introductory remarks by Margaret Biggs (President, Canadian International Development Agency), the Honourable Bev Oda (International Cooperation Minister), Michelle Bachelet (Executive Director, UN Women) and Naila Kabeer (Professor, Development Studies London University, UK).
