On September 27, 2012, in Ottawa, the Rideau Institute organized a conference titled "Circumpolar Challenges: An ambitious agenda for the Arctic Council." The first panel examined environmental protection in the north and featured Elizabeth May (Green Party leader), Trevor Taylor (policy director, Oceans North Canada), Alexander Shestakov (director, Global Arctic Programme, World Wildlife Fund) and Robert Hage (former Canadian diplomat).
