Canada 2020 Debates
Canada 2020 inaugural debate series, Ottawa, Ont., October 3, 2006. Canada 2020’s mandate is to develop progressive policy solutions that will modernize Canada’s federal government. This debate session focuses on Canadian peacekeeping and Canada’s international military role. Retired major general Lewis MacKenzie offers his views on Canadian peacekeeping and gives suggestions for the re-establishment of Canada’s international military presence. John Watson (president of Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) Canada) discusses problems with Canada’s humanitarian aid strategies in the Middle East after the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Jim Travers (international affairs columnist for the Toronto Star) focuses on potential lessons to be learned from traditional Canadian peacekeeping methods. After presenting their speeches, the speakers debate questions posed by Paul Wells (Maclean’s magazine) and audience members. Mr. Wells also introduces the speakers and moderates.
