GG Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case
Presented by Governor General David Johnston in a ceremony in Winnipeg, these awards honour Canadian women who have contributed to the advancement of gender equality. The 2016 recipients are Cecilia Benoit, Anna-Louise Crago, Pascale Navarro, Norma Jean Profitt, Diane Redsky and youth recipient Lucia Lorenzi. In January 1916, Manitoba became the first Canadian province to grant some women the right to vote in provincial elections. This year's ceremony is being held at the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba to mark the 100th anniversary of this important milestone. In 1929, five women from Alberta, known as "the Famous Five," won a historic legal battle to have women recognized as persons in Canada and therefore eligible to hold appointed or elected office. In 1979, the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case were established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision. (November 15, 2016)
