Governor General Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case, October 19, 2017
Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case Presented by Governor General Julie Payette in a ceremony at Rideau Hall, these awards honour Canadians who have contributed to the advancement of women's equality. The 2017 recipients are Betsy Bury, Micheline Dumont, Ramona Lumpkin, Elizabeth Sheehy, Linda Slanina and yourth recipient Melissa Sariffodeen. In 1929, five women, known as the Famous Five, won a legal battle to have women recognized as persons in Canada and therefore eligible to hold appointed or elected office. In 1979, the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case were established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this historic event. (October 19, 2017)
