GG's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case – December 14, 2018
Governor General Julie Payette presents awards in commemoration of the Persons Case to six laureates during a ceremony on Parliament Hill. These awards honour Canadian women who have contributed to the advancement of gender equality. The 2018 recipients are Rina Arseneault, Shirley Cuillierrier, Rina Fraticelli, Charlotte Hrenchuk, Hélène Lee-Gosselin, and youth recipient Alana Robert. In 1929, five women from Alberta, known as "the Famous Five," won a historic legal battle to have women recognized as persons in Canada and therefore eligible to hold appointed or elected office. In 1979, the Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case were established to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision. (no interpretation)
