The contenders are Joe Comartin (MP for Windsor–Tecumseh, Ont.), Bill Blaikie (MP for Winnipeg–Transcona, Man.), Jack Layton (author and a former president the Federation of Canadian Municipalities), Lorne Nystrom (MP for Regina–Qu’Appelle, Sask.), Pierre Ducasse (associate president of the NDP) and Bev Meslo (NDP socialist caucus).
