Scrums - March 6, 2012

NDP democratic reform critic David Christopherson and interim Liberal leader Bob Rae spoke to reporters about the decision of a House of Commons committee not to increase auditing powers for Elections Canada. Chief electoral officer Marc Mayrand had wanted the ability to request and examine any document about party expenses. The rejection comes at a time when the agency is investigating allegations of electoral fraud.

NDP ethics critic Charlie Angus commented on the ruling today by Speaker Andrew Scheer on threatening videos that targeted Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. Scheer ruled that the videos posted by the hacker group Anonymous breached the minister's parliamentary privileges. A Commons committee will examine the threats and breach of privileges.

NDP justice critic Jack Harris and Bloc Québécois justice critic Maria Mourani responded to questions about the government's omnibus crime bill, which has returned to the House of Commons for final debate. MPs are debating the Senate amendments which were made to Bill C-10 last week.
