Supreme Court Hearings

Suresh v. Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) (Part 2 of 3)

The court hears arguments in case #27790, Suresh v. Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration), on May 22, 2002.

In 1995, the Canadian government detained and commenced deportation proceedings against Manickavasagam Suresh, a Convention refugee, alleging that he was a member of and fundraiser for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, a group alleged to be engaged in terrorist activity in Sri Lanka. The Federal Court upheld his deportation as reasonable. M. Suresh applied for judicial review of the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration’s subsequent order to deport him; that application was dismissed. Mr. Suresh is appealing that decision to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Jack Martin presents arguments on behalf of the Canadian Council for Refugees, an intervener in the case. David Matas presents arguments on behalf of the Canadian Bar Association, an intervener.
