Supreme Court Hearings - Information Commissioner of Canada v. Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Part 1 of 2)

The court hears arguments in case #28601, Information Commissioner of Canada v. the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, on October 29, 2002.

In 1998, Gordon Ronalds requested information regarding four RCMP officers in connection with litigation against those officers. The RCMP refused, claiming that doing so would, in revealing personal information about the officers, contravene the Privacy Act. Mr. Ronalds complained to the Information Commissioner of Canada, who launched an investigation. The RCMP subsequently released some, but not all, of the requested information. After his investigation, the Information Commissioner advised the RCMP to release all of the information. The RCMP refused. The Information Commissioner then appealed to the Trial Division of the Federal Court for an order that the RCMP release the information. The Federal Court ruled in favor of the RCMP, a decision the Information Commissioner is now appealing to the Supreme Court.

Lawyer Clayton Ruby presents arguments on behalf of the Information Commissioner of Canada.
