Meeting Places
When fire virtually destroyed the current Parliament Buildings in 1916, politicians in Ottawa moved to the Victoria Memorial Museum Building, now home to the Canadian Museum of Nature. MPs met in the auditorium, with Senators in a first-floor gallery.
Parliament and the provincial legislatures meet today in a collection of resplendent, historic locations – from Centre Block to Province House in Charlottetown, and from Queen’s Park in Toronto to the majestic dome atop B.C.’s Parliament Buildings.
What about when these assemblies first met? Legislatures weren’t built in a day. Each province and territory has an interesting story to tell, many from before Confederation. Hospitals, schools, pubs, and even private homes have all borne witness to Canadian government.
