Rockburn Presents

Craig Oliver

When he was only 18 and working as a reporter for CBC Radio, Craig Oliver was sent to report on John Diefenbaker's campaign as it made a stop in Prince Rupert, B.C. The year was 1957 and since then Oliver's career has taken him around the world to the front lines of the major events of the last 50 years.

Oliver's childhood was trying at the best of times; his father was a rumrunner and his mother an alcoholic, and for several years Oliver was shuffled around from one foster home to another. A chance summer job at the local CBC gave Oliver an opening into the world of broadcasting and from there it was no looking back. Oliver moved to CTV in 1972 and a year later helped launch Canada's first morning news program Canada AM.

Oliver served as the network's Bureau Chief in Washington from 1979 - 1988 and spent the next 20 years as the Ottawa Bureau Chief and host of the flagship program Question Period. Craig Oliver recently penned a memoir of his life "Oliver's Twist: The Life and Times of an Unapologetic Newshound". Ken Rockburn spoke with Craig Oliver in Ottawa.

Hello Mr. Oliver, I had a step granddaughter graduating on June 14, 2013. We were all very happy to have seen you receive your Honorary Degree from Nipissing University at the same time. It was a special feeling knowing that we shared a small space in the same room as a man of your stature and knowledge. You gave a wonderful speech to the audience and to all the graduates. I just wanted to take a minute to tell you how very honored we were to have been there on that special day for us all. It was also special for Shannen as she is now going to be in Ryerson to complete 2 years of journalism. I only wish for her that she, at some time in her life, gets the opportunity to perhaps meet in person the amazing and so well respected Dr. Craig Oliver O.C. Thank you Hopefully your new acquaintance Susan Sparling.

The rules of Question Period should be reformed to require the Government to answer the questions asked of it by the opposition parties. Obviously, the speaker could give a lot of latitude about what constitutes an answer by the Government. The speaker should not allow the Government to talk about other things that have nothing to do with the question. Question Period should not be a place for the Government to campaign for election or ask questions to the opposition.

The rules of Question Period should be reformed. The Government should be required to answer questions put by the opposition parties.Obviously, the speaker could allow a wide range of discussion by Ministers on what constitutes an answer. However, the speaker should not allow the Government to campaign for election, grandstand, attack the opposition parties or ask questions of the opposition. The Speaker of the House is there to do a job and these things should be out of order. There should be a requirement to stay on topic and answer the question!
