Catherine Clark spoke to Lieutenant Governor David Onley and Ruth Ann Onley about their lives Beyond Politics.
Ontario's Lieutenant Governor David Onley was born in Midland, Ont. and at the age of three contracted polio. His disability didn't prevent him from excelling at school and David graduated with an honours degree in political science from the University of Toronto. Onley was an intern at Queen's Park before being hired by CITY-TV as their news anchor, becoming the first disabled person to be promoted to that position in Canada.
Onley spent 22 years at CITY-TV as news anchor, science reporter and weatherman, and found enough time to pen the bestselling novel 'Shuttle'.
For years Onley worked as an advocate for the disabled, including stints with the Accessibility Standards Advisory Council of Ontario, the March of Dimes and the Centre for Independent Living. In 2007, Onley was appointed as the 28th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Onley is married to Christian recording artist Ruth Ann Onley; they have three children.
