Catherine Clark spoke to Devinder Shory about his life Beyond Politics.
Conservative MP Devinder Shory was the seventh of eight children born in the city of Barnala, in the Indian state of Punjab.
Devinder studied law at Punjabi University, was called to the bar, and practiced for several years before deciding to emigrate to Canada. Like many before him, Devinder suffered the fate of many highly educated immigrants and had his credentials go unrecognized. As a result, he was forced to drive a taxi and unload trucks to make a living.
Devinder also had to get married, and by arrangement of the two families wed Neetu in Montreal. After the Quebec bar refused to accept Devinder's credentials, they moved to Ontario, then B.C., and finally to Alberta, where the Alberta Bar gave him the opportunity to practice on condition that he successfully complete studies at the University of Calgary.
After 10 years making a name for himself in the community, Devinder ran for public office and was elected as the MP for Calgary Northeast in 2008.
