Catherine Clark spoke to Canada's Ambassador in Washington, Gary Doer, about his life Beyond Politics.
Gary Doer, served as the premier of Manitoba for ten years before being appointed to the position by the Prime Minister. During those ten years of balanced budgets and steady economic growth, Doer's popularity grew not only in his province of Manitoba but throughout Canada.
Born in Winnipeg, Gary dropped out of university to take a fulltime job as a corrections officer. Active in his union, Gary eventually became President of the Manitoba Government Employees Association, and in 1986 made the move to politics, getting elected as the MLA for Concordia. Two years later he was made leader of the provincial NDP and under his leadership the party grew in strength and by 1999 had won the confidence of the majority of Manitoba voters. Married to Ginny Devine, they have two children together.
