NDP MP Hoang Mai was born and raised in the Montreal South Shore community of Brossard. Mai's parents emigrated from Vietnam to Canada in 1967 and met each other while attending school in Montreal.
Hoang followed his mother's footsteps and pursued a career in law (his mother is a notary, his father an engineer). Hoang studied at the Université de Montréal and articled at The Hague before entering corporate law which took him to Vietnam, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Hoang became active in the NDP following Thomas Mulcair's by-election victory in 2007. Hoang ran in 2008 in the Quebec riding of Brossard-La Prairie and finished fourth with just over 12 per cent of the vote. In 2011 Hoang won, defeating the incumbent by nearly 10,000 votes. An avid scuba enthusiast, Hoang enjoys playing soccer and hockey but as a newly-elected MP has discovered that he doesn't have the time for sports he once had.
