Conservative MP John Carmichael spent 35 years in the car business before making the move to federal politics. The father of 3 and grandfather of 4, was best known by Torontonians as the owner of City Buick Chevrolet Cadillac GMC, a business his father began back in 1955. John was quite athletic as a young man, playing a variety of sports and excelled particularly well in rowing where he competed competitively at the university level and just failed to make the Olympic team for the Montreal Summer Games in 1976. John served as president of Rowing Canada Aviron until 2006 and sat on numerous other boards and councils in the Toronto area. John first ran in 2006 in the riding of Don Valley West where he finished second to the Liberal incumbent. John won the riding in 2011 on his third try.
