Conservative MP John Weston comes from a proud and distinguished military family. John’s father laboured as a POW during WW II on the fabled bridge over the River Kwai and John’s uncle, Ernest Smokey Smith, was honoured with a Victoria Cross for bravery, also in WW II. However, a military career wasn’t in John’s future, instead he pursued a career in law with degrees at Harvard and Osgoode Hall. Fluent in Mandarin, John spent several years working as lawyer in Asia, mostly in Taiwan, where he met his future wife Donna. Together they have three children, Shane, Jake and Mei Mei. In 2006, John ran for the Harper Conservatives in the riding of West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country and lost by less than a thousand votes. In 2008, he tried again and won with a plurality of over 10,000 votes. John Weston spoke to Catherine Clark about his life Beyond Politics.
